General Information...
The United Nations (UN) is an international organisation that began in 1945. It was the Franklin D. Roosevelt, the US president at the time who suggested to create a place where representatives from all countries may congregate in peace, to express concerns about their specific countries. The UN currently has 193 members of state within it. The official United Nations site claims that they are for the purpose to, "... take action on the issues confronting humanity in the 21st century, such as peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, human rights, disarmament, terrorism, humanitarian and health emergencies, gender equality, governance, food production, and more."
The United Nations Flag
Is United Nations flag can be located outside the headquarters of the UN, in New York. The UN Flag consists of the official logo which was designed in 1945 under the authority of the design team leader, Oliver Lincoln Lundquist.
The UN official website explains the flag to be, "a map of the world representing an azimuthal equidistant projection centred on the North Pole, inscribed in a wreath consisting of crossed conventionalized branches of the olive tree, in gold on a field of smoke-blue with all water areas in white. The projection of the map extends to 60 degrees south latitude, and includes five concentric circles (original description of the emblem)." |
In addition, the olive branches also wrap around the world representing the aim of the UN, world peace. The blue in the background can also symbolise the colour of peace, and the white symbolic of safety.
Evaluation of the UN
Ultimately, I believe that the world would be a much worse place without the United Nations due to the fact that it encourages peace, and unites everyone together. Whilst the world is still facing issues such as wars, poverty, climate change and many more, the United Nations has the power internationally to actually make a change. It is also an excellent organisation as it involves multiple others, showing that it really wants what it says it does e.g. to eliminate poverty, as it uses the resources provided efficiently.
"Membership in the United Nations is open to all other peace-loving states which accept the obligations contained in the present Charter and, in the judgment of the Organization, are able and willing to carry out these obligations.
The admission of any such state to membership in the United Nations will be effected by a decision of the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council."
